Why is Skin Care So Important?
Proper skin care is important because our skin is the largest barrier against infection that we have. Keeping our skin healthy and moist helps keep this barrier strong. When the skin gets dry or irritated by harsh soaps, cracks in the skin can occur. Cracks in the skin make a person more prone to infection. Using a proper skin care regimen daily can help preserve this important protective layer.
Appearance
Proper skin care is vital if you’re concerned about your physical appearance. Unhealthy skin tends to appear sallow and dull, whereas healthy skin appears full and vibrant. Wrinkles develop with more ease and sink deeper if your skin is dehydrated and unhealthy, and it can result in uneven patches that have a mottled color. When skin is unhealthy it loses elasticity, which can make it sag and appear thin.
Health
Proper skin care is not only about looking good, it’s about staying healthy. Poor skin care habits can lead to rashes, sores, acne, and wrinkles. Unhealthy skin is more susceptible to disease and infection and is more likely to scar after an injury. Proper care is particularly important for people who experience skin issues, such as psoriasis, or have skin allergies.
Keeping Skin Healthy
Skin is constantly growing and changing, so you have to remain vigilant in caring for it. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and maintain a balanced diet to provide the vitamins and minerals your skin needs. Always make sure to use sunblock if you’re going to spend time outside.
Proper Skin Care
Proper skin care means cleansing it properly. Skin needs moisture to survive, so avoid using hot water when you wash your face, as the heat sucks moisture from your skin. Try using warm or cool water instead. Also, avoid harsh or chemical-heavy soaps, as they strip moisture from your skin while polluting it. Keep your skin moisturized and reapply as often as needed to maintain its hydration.
Skin Care Regimen to Optimize Post-Laser Treatment Success
Post-laser treated skin is sensitive, easily irritated and compromised. Washing the skin with cleansers that are harsh and stripping, like those that are acid-based or exfoliating, can actually damage your skin. You’ll want to keep your skin as clean as possible, which may mean limiting the use of your regular skin care products temporarily until fully healed.
If your skin is red and swollen after you’ve been treated, make sure to apply cold compresses and ice packs to the area, as this will mitigate some of the inflammation. Elevating the treated area with an extra pillow or two can help as well.
Moisture preservation is extremely important. A lack of moisture, post-laser treatment, can cause the skin to scab and may even delay the healing process. We recommend Hydra Balm to deeply hydrate, heal, and regenerate skin. During the first few weeks after treatment we also recommend Epidermal Repair, which is specially formulated for compromised skin. Epidermal repair accelerates restoration of the skin’s protective barrier.
Sun protection is also essential because skin is vulnerable in the healing phase. Failure to wear an appropriate SPF can cause treated skin, or your tattoo, to be even more damaged or darker than it was pre-treatment. We like Physical UV Defense SPF 30 because it was formulated specifically for post procedure use. It is a delicate care broad spectrum protective sunscreen that protects your skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB radiation.
We’ve researched the products we recommend extensively and offer them in a Post Laser Treatment Kit that we will discuss with you in more detail during your Free Consultation. Each Kit comes with very specific instructions on how and when to use each product to maximize your results.
